William Morris

William Morris (1834–1896) was a major cultural figure of the nineteenth century whose work as an artist, designer, writer, and printer was shaped by his deep affection for the aesthetic and political world of the Middle Ages. His epic poem “The Earthly Paradise” (1868-1870) weaves together classical myths and medieval legends, while his later works and translations of Icelandic sagas demonstrate his skill in capturing ancient tales for contemporary audiences. Morris’s legacy extends beyond his artistic and literary contributions; his advocacy for handcrafted work and traditional methods of production continues to inspire movements in design and the decorative arts.
